5G is a mobile communication standard that will soon be replacing 4G, allowing wireless internet access at a much faster speed.

5G is also beyond improving speed. It is expected to unleash the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem where the network can serve communication needs for billions of connected devices, with the right trade-off between speed, latency, and cost.

Current Scenario

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence Report, sixty-seven countries, including the USA, China, Australia, and other European countries, currently enjoy using the 5G network. But India has to wait till next year for 5G Services.

Jio, Airtel, and VI have begun their trials in Mumbai, Gurugram, and Pune, respectively.

Currently, the major telecom companies implementing 5G technology globally are AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

In the USA, there was a drastic increase in stock market prices of telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile during the year 2019 after integrating 5G connectivity in many cities of the USA.

So How Quick is 5G?

5G peak upload speed is 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). 5G is three to six times faster than 4G. From 200 milliseconds for 4G, 5G can go down to 1 millisecond (1 ms) with 5G.

Usually, the average reaction time for humans to a virtual stimulus is 250 ms or 1/4th of a second. People are capped around 190-200 ms with proper training.

Imagine now that your car could react 250 times faster than you. Imagine it could also respond to hundreds of incoming information and communicate its reaction back to other vehicles and roads all within milliseconds. And that could happen all because of 5G.

Uses of 5G

We can use 5G in various ways.

1. V2X (Vehicle to everything communication), V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure), autonomous, connected cars.

The automobile industry in India currently contributes 7.1% of the Indian GDP. And it is a significant factor of macroeconomic growth in India. It is also expected that this sector will grow further in the future. Here, 5G has a critical role to play. With 5G, we can boost our automobile production units and total export growth.

2. Immersive Virtual Reality Gaming

Gaming Industry has a huge potential in creating employment opportunities for many. 5G has immense potential to bring VR to the masses. And with emerging technologies like Web3.0, Metaverse, AR-VR, NFT, the whole gaming scenario will change in some years.

3. Drone/ Robotics Application

Gaming Industry has a huge potential in creating employment opportunities for many. 5G has immense potential to bring VR to the masses. And with emerging technologies like Web3.0, Metaverse, AR-VR, NFT, the whole gaming scenario will change in some years.

5G can also enhance the performance of  Remote Surgical Operation, simultaneous translating, Driverless Car navigation, etc.

Final Thoughts

When so much is happening, 5G will undoubtedly change the paradigm of how we use the internet today. Many are already waiting to bring innovation to the table.
