9 Ways How Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles Can Change Our Lives

The One Liner

Recently, Nitin Gadkari rolled into the Parliament in Toyota Mirai, a green hydrogen-powered car- the first of a kind in India. Toyota Mirai India's first Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) And there are nine ways how this car powered by green hydrogen can change our lives.

Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles Produce Zero Emission

1

This FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) has no tailpipe exhaustion except for water.

Cost of Travel is Rs.2 per Kilometre

2

This car, powered by hydrogen on a full tank, covers 600 Kilometres, which cost of travel of just Rs. 2 per Km. While the cost of travel of a Petrol Car is Rs.10 per Km and the cost of travel in an Electric Vehicle is Rs. 1 per Km.

Will Make India Self Reliant

3

The increasing price of both Petrol and diesel is affecting the commoner. India has imported 8 Lakh crore crude oil, diesel, and Petrol. India has been working on alternate fuel production such as methanol, ethanol, bio-CNG, Bio-Diesel, and green hydrogen to cut crude oil, diesel, and Petrol consumption.

Green Hydrogen is 100 percent Clean Energy

4

Hydrogen produced from biomass using carbon capture and storage is called green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced via the electrolysis of water. It is a zero-carbon energy vector.

Fuelling Time is 5 minutes

5

Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles have a fuelling time of five minutes.

Fuel Cell EVs are Long Term Energy Solution

6

Since the charging time of Electric vehicles is more so, Fuel Cell EVs are considered a long-term energy solution. And in fact, the fuelling time of FCEVs from hydrogen fuel stations is the same as the time taken to fuel a tank of petrol or diesel cars.

Research and Development

7

A pilot project by Toyota-Kirloskar limited and the international center for Automotives Technology to get deeper insights and evaluate the world's most advanced fuel cell electric vehicles is being conducted. Given the fact that the FCEV runs on hydrogen, the project will gauge the vehicle's sustainability on Indian roads, given its climatic condition. And in fact, the fuelling time of FCEVs from hydrogen fuel stations is the same as the time taken to fuel a tank of petrol or diesel cars.

Soon, Green Hydrogen will be Produced in India

8

Reliance is planning to scale its Renewable dedicated gig factories, in which one out of four factories will target making electrolyzers for green hydrogen. An MOU was signed between Larsen and Turbo & Hydrogen Pro in January 2021, which revealed a plan to jointly build an electrolyzer manufacturing capacity.

FCEV's battery weight is lower than Electric Vehicle Batteries

9

Hydrogen-powered car batteries used to store energy is 30 times lighter than electric car vehicles batteries.

The One Liner

Green Hydrogen-powered vehicles are indeed a game-changer and give enormous benefits, but the cost of the vehicle is a concern here.  While Petrol/ Diesel-powered Vehicles start from Rs. 3 Lakhs and electric vehicles range from Rs. 13 to 15 Lakhs, but Hydrogen-powered vehicles range between Rs. 50 to 65 Lakhs.
